Linkable assets: statistics pages, tools, original research and the outreach behind them

A linkable asset is a page other people have a reason to cite, such as a statistics page, a free tool or original research. It earns links within Google's rules, but only after outreach puts it in front of the people who link.

In short

  • Statistics pages, free tools, original research, glossaries, templates and regional indexes are the asset types that earn links most reliably.
  • Practitioners estimate an all-in cost of $150 to $400 per earned link for a good outreach team, on top of the cost of building the asset.
  • Cold link outreach converts about 1.3 percent of prospects into links, according to Hunter's outreach guide.
  • The risk is R1, and the first links usually take one to three months.

A linkable asset is a page that gives other writers a reason to link: a number they need to cite, a tool their readers can use, a dataset nobody else has. The asset is half the work. The other half is outreach, because a page nobody has seen earns nothing.

Why people use them

Assets compound. A statistics page that ranks keeps collecting links from writers who search for a figure to cite, with no further outreach. BuzzStream’s list of digital PR examples credits HubSpot’s marketing statistics page with 14,000 linking domains and JustPark’s interactive reaction time test with more than 1,300. Many of those examples predate 2024.

The links are also earned, which makes this R1. In uSERP’s September 2026 survey of 116 senior SEOs, 8.6 percent named linkable assets as the tactic with the strongest results, third behind digital PR and niche edits.

Asset types and what they cost to build

The build costs below are practitioner estimates. We found no published dataset for them.

Asset Why it earns links Estimated build cost Fits
Statistics page Writers cite sourced figures, and it earns passively once it ranks $300 to $1,500, plus refreshes SaaS, finance, health, marketing
Free tool or calculator People link to things their readers can use $500 to $20,000 Finance, SaaS, betting odds, health, property
Original research or survey Others must cite your data $2,000 to $15,000 Brands, B2B
Glossary Definitions get cited and feed AI answers $50 to $150 per term SaaS, finance, legal, technical fields
Templates and checklists Resource lists link to downloads $200 to $2,000 B2B, HR, marketing, legal
Map or regional index One pitch per region for local press $2,000 to $8,000 Travel, property, finance
Image library Original charts and photos get reused, and you ask for credit Low Travel, food, science, B2B
Infographic A visual summary others embed $300 to $1,500 Rarely worth it alone

Quality markers are consistent across types: link your primary sources, show the date, publish the method, and keep an ungated version. A tool should work on a phone without a login.

The outreach that goes with them

Find prospects

  • Sites that link to competing or outdated resources.
  • Articles that mention your topic but not you.
  • Resource pages, found with search operators such as intitle:resources plus your topic. See broken link building.
  • Journalists who covered similar stories.

Segment and personalise

Sort prospects by the reason they would link: a data citation, a resource to add, a broken link to fix. Then write to that reason. A good outreach email proves you read the page, names the exact place the link would go, and says what the reader gains.

Follow up once or twice

Leave three to five working days between messages and add something new each time. Practitioners agree that more than two follow-ups starts to harm your sender reputation.

Look after deliverability

This is standard practitioner practice. Send from a separate domain or subdomain, set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC, warm up new mailboxes for two to four weeks, and keep to 30 to 50 sends per mailbox per day. Google and Yahoo have applied bulk sender rules since February 2024, including a spam complaint rate under 0.3 percent, and Microsoft followed in May 2025.

What response to expect

Reply rates have fallen. The Backlinko and Pitchbox study of 12 million emails from 2019 found an 8.5 percent reply rate. It also found that a personalised subject line lifted replies by 30.5 percent and one follow-up by 65.8 percent. BuzzStream’s 2025 figure, across 51 million emails, is 3.59 percent.

Replies are not links. Hunter’s outreach guide puts prospect-to-link conversion for standard link outreach at about 1.3 percent. One specialist can send 200 to 1,000 quality emails a month, by practitioner estimates.

Be ready for the reply that asks for money. In commercial niches in 2026, many site owners answer a link request with a price. At that point you are looking at a niche edit, which is a different decision.

Practitioners put the all-in cost for a good team at $150 to $400 per earned link, with outreach tools at $150 to $600 a month before labour. That range assumes the asset already exists. Add the build cost and divide by the links you expect over the life of the page. An asset that ranks and keeps earning brings the average down each year.

Skyscraper, and why it faded

The skyscraper method finds a page with many links, builds something better, and asks the linkers to switch. It still works when the original is out of date or broken and your version has data of its own. A version that is only longer no longer converts. Practitioner guides commonly quote 1 to 5 percent of prospects, which is a low-confidence figure, and editors recognise the template pitch.

Risks and footprints

The tactic is R1. Two things can spoil it:

  • Keyword anchors in embed codes. An infographic or widget embed that forces an optimised anchor is the widget link pattern named in Google’s link spam policy.
  • Templated pitches. Openers such as “I love your article on” followed by a pasted title are recognised and ignored.

When not to use it

Skip asset building if you cannot commit to outreach, since a published asset with no promotion rarely ranks well enough to earn on its own. Skip it too if you need links this month: first links usually take one to three months. For faster wins, start with link reclamation and unlinked mentions. If your asset is a data story with news value, pitch it as digital PR.

Common questions

What is a linkable asset?

A page built so that other sites have a reason to cite it. The common types are statistics pages, free tools and calculators, original research, glossaries, templates and regional indexes.

Do infographics still earn links?

Rarely on their own. Infographics were the lowest-performing outreach topic in the Backlinko and Pitchbox study of 12 million emails, and practitioners now treat them as one part of a data campaign.

Does the skyscraper technique still work?

Only when the original is outdated or broken and your version adds data nobody else has. A longer version of the same article no longer persuades people to switch their link.

How much does a linkable asset cost to build?

Practitioner estimates run from about $300 for a simple statistics page to $20,000 for a complex tool. These are working ranges and not measured averages.
