How much traffic does AI search send?
AI assistants sent 0.32% of all website traffic in 2026, according to SE Ranking's study of 101,574 sites. The share is small and growing, the visitors stay longer, and most of the effect of AI answers never shows up as a visit. Here is how to see it in analytics.
In short
- AI assistants accounted for 0.02% of website traffic in 2024, 0.24% in 2025 and 0.32% in 2026, in SE Ranking's June 2026 study of 101,574 sites.
- ChatGPT sent 74.8% of that AI referral traffic in 2026, followed by Gemini at 11.6%, Perplexity at 7.2%, Copilot at 3.5% and Claude at 2.6%.
- Visitors from AI platforms spent 9 minutes 19 seconds on site against 5 minutes 33 seconds for organic search visitors in the same study.
- GA4 has a default "AI Assistant" channel, and clicks from Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted under Organic Search instead.
- Pew Research found in July 2025 that only 1% of Google visits with an AI summary led to a click on a link inside the summary.
Less than half of one per cent. SE Ranking’s study of 101,574 websites, published in June 2026, put AI assistants at 0.32% of all site traffic in 2026. That is 16 times the 2024 figure and still a small channel next to organic search.
The low number does not mean AI answers have little effect. It means the effect mostly happens without a click. This lesson gives the benchmarks, shows where the visits appear in analytics and explains what the visit count leaves out.
The benchmarks
SE Ranking’s study covered January 2025 to April 2026, with 2024 as a reference year.
| Year | AI share of all site traffic |
|---|---|
| 2024 | 0.02% |
| 2025 | 0.24% |
| 2026 | 0.32% |
By region in 2026, the share was 0.29% in the US, 0.27% in the EU and 0.16% in the UK. Ahrefs is reported to have measured 0.28% across all AI chatbots in March 2026. We saw that figure second-hand and did not read the original.
These are averages across many kinds of site. A software company whose buyers research with assistants can sit well above them, and a local shop well below.
Which assistants send the visits
| Assistant | Share of AI referrals, 2026 | Change on 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 74.8% | Up 27% |
| Gemini | 11.6% | Up 231% |
| Perplexity | 7.2% | Slight decline |
| Copilot | 3.5% | Up 31% |
| Claude | 2.6% | Up 320% |

ChatGPT dominates referrals, but the mix is moving. This table also leaves out Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, because clicks from those arrive as ordinary Google organic visits. Google said at its I/O event in May 2026 that AI Overviews had more than 2.5 billion monthly users and AI Mode more than 1 billion. The largest AI surface by reach is therefore invisible as a separate referral source.
How AI visitors behave
Visitors from AI platforms spent 9 minutes 19 seconds on site against 5 minutes 33 seconds for organic search visitors, a gap of 67.7%, in the SE Ranking data.
On conversion, the published figures come from vendors and should be read as reported.
- Semrush reported in July 2025 that the average AI search visitor was worth 4.4 times a traditional organic visitor by conversion rate. The sample covered digital marketing topics. Its projection that AI visitors will overtake organic visitors by early 2028 is an extrapolation.
- Adobe Analytics is reported to have found AI referrals to US retail sites up 393% year on year in the first quarter of 2026, converting 42% better than other traffic in March 2026. A year earlier the same traffic converted 38% worse. We took this from a secondary summary.
A plausible reading is that someone who clicks through from an assistant has already had their questions answered and arrives closer to a decision. That is an interpretation, not a finding.
Where it shows up in GA4
The default channel. Google’s Analytics help page lists an “AI Assistant” channel in the default channel group. It applies when the medium is exactly ai-assistant or the referrer matches Google’s list of AI assistants, and the page names ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok as examples. Find it in the traffic acquisition report.
What it excludes. The same page says the channel excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that Organic Search includes them. So GA4 will never show Google’s AI surfaces as their own line.
Assistants it may miss. The help page gives examples and not the full list. It is reported that Perplexity was not included when the channel launched. To be safe, create a custom channel group with a rule on session source that matches the domains you care about. A working pattern is:
chatgpt\.com|perplexity\.ai|claude\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com
Place that rule above Referral in the channel order, or the visits will be counted there first.
Landing pages. Break the channel down by landing page. Assistants often link to deep pages, such as documentation, comparison pages and data, and not to the home page. That tells you which pages are being retrieved.
Other places to look
- Search Console. AI Overviews and AI Mode have counted in the Web search totals since 17 June 2025. Google announced dedicated generative AI performance reports on 3 June 2026. Check your own property for what they break out.
- Bing Webmaster Tools. The AI Performance report, introduced in February 2026, shows how often Copilot cites your pages. It has no click data, so it measures citations and not visits.
- Server logs. OpenAI’s documentation describes a ChatGPT-User agent that fetches a page when a user’s request calls for it. A fetch is not a visit: the assistant read the page so that the person did not have to.
Why the visit count understates the effect
Answers end the search. Pew Research published a study in July 2025 of 68,879 Google searches by 900 US adults. People clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits that showed an AI summary, against 15% without one. Only 1% clicked a link inside the summary. Sessions ended after 26% of pages with a summary against 16% without.
Click rates are falling. Seer Interactive reported in November 2025 that organic click-through rate on queries with an AI Overview fell from 1.76% in June 2024 to 0.61% in September 2025, across 3,119 informational terms for 42 clients. When the brand was cited in the overview, organic click-through was 0.70% against 0.52% when it was not. Seer notes it cannot show that the citation caused the difference.
Assistants read far more than they refer. Cloudflare is reported to have found in August 2025 that OpenAI crawled about 1,091 pages for every visitor it referred, and Anthropic about 38,066, against 5.4 for Google. We saw those ratios in a secondary source.
Some visits lose their label. Analytics can only credit an assistant when the visit carries a referrer or a tagged link. A person who reads an answer and types your name into a search bar later arrives as branded search or direct. That is how analytics works in general, not a measured share.
So treat referral sessions as a floor. Pair them with mention rate from AI visibility measurement and with your branded search trend.
What to do with the number
- Set up the channel and a custom group, and record a monthly baseline.
- Report it next to visibility, not in place of it. A brand can be named in a third of answers and receive almost no clicks.
- Watch landing pages for the content assistants link to, and keep those pages accurate.
- Do not forecast revenue from it yet. The share is under 1% and the conversion studies are vendor-produced.
- Expect the gap to persist. Click rates are falling while AI use grows, and nothing in the 2026 data points the other way. Ads are also arriving in assistants: Similarweb is reported to have found adverts on about 26% of ChatGPT responses by May 2026, which we did not check at source.

Common questions
What percentage of website traffic comes from AI?
About 0.32% of all traffic in 2026, according to SE Ranking's study of 101,574 sites. The figure was 0.29% for US sites, 0.27% in the EU and 0.16% in the UK. Individual sites vary widely around that average.
How do I see ChatGPT traffic in GA4?
Look at the AI Assistant default channel in the traffic acquisition report, or filter session source for chatgpt.com. For assistants the default channel misses, create a custom channel group with a rule that matches their domains.
Does traffic from AI Overviews show as AI traffic in GA4?
No. Google's Analytics documentation says the AI Assistant channel excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that Organic Search includes them.
Do AI visitors convert better than search visitors?
Some vendor studies say so. Semrush reported in July 2025 that an AI search visitor was worth 4.4 times an organic visitor by conversion rate, for digital marketing topics only. Check your own data before assuming it applies to you.
Why is AI traffic so low if so many people use AI assistants?
Because the answer is given on the spot. People read it and stop, or search for the brand later. The assistants also crawl far more pages than they send visitors to.
