Link building cost in 2026: pricing by method, authority, niche and country
SEOs put the acceptable price of one quality link at about $509 on average in 2026. Paid guest posts average $295 direct, niche edits $179 and digital PR $1,250 to $1,500 per linking domain. Full price tables and budget models below.
In short
- The acceptable price for one high-quality link averaged $508.95 in a March 2026 survey of 518 SEOs by Editorial.link.
- A guest post costs $295 on average bought direct and $461 through a vendor, and a niche edit lists at $179, according to BuzzStream's 2026 studies.
- List price is not paid price. Adsy's analysis of 37,542 sites found an average asking price of $406 against an average purchase price of $59 at DR 41 to 50.
- Gambling guest posts average $238 across all sellers and $1,109 on quality sites only, according to BuzzStream's 2026 data.
- An in-house team producing about 30 links a month costs $18,500 to $34,620 a month, or $400 to $700 per link, according to a 2026 Vazoola analysis cited by BlueTree.
Link building pricing in 2026 runs from $1 for a link on a public blog network to more than $7,000 for a top-tier news placement. The useful question is what a link that works costs. In a March 2026 survey of 518 SEOs by Editorial.link, the average acceptable price for one high-quality link was $508.95.
All prices are in US dollars unless marked. Each figure names its source and date. Where a number is a list price, we say so, because list price and paid price differ a great deal.

| Public blog network links | $1 to $5 each, sold in bundles | Respona, July 2026 |
Three notes on reading this table.
In the Ahrefs outreach tests, only 12.6% of sites were willing to sell a niche edit, and about half of the “write for us” sites that replied asked for a fee. Those tests are now dated.
A typical digital PR campaign costs $5,000 to $10,000 and yields six to seven unique linking domains once syndicated copies are excluded, according to BuzzStream. In its State of Digital PR 2026 survey, the most common self-reported cost per link was $300 to $500, and 39.2% of respondents did not know their cost per link.

List price is not paid price
Adsy analysed 37,542 sites using its 2024 data and compared what sellers asked with what buyers paid.
| DR band | Average asking price | Average purchase price |
|---|---|---|
| 41 to 50 | $406 | $59 |
| 71 to 80 | $941 | $199 |
| 90 to 92 | $4,595 | $318 |
Buyers concentrate on the cheap end of every band. That is why averages built from listings overstate what the market spends, and why a quote should always be checked against the specific site.
Cost by authority and traffic
BuzzStream’s August 2026 study gives average list prices for link insertions.
| DR | Average | Monthly organic traffic | Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 to 9 | $113 | 0 to 100 | $137 |
| 10 to 19 | $144 | 101 to 1,000 | $227 |
| 20 to 29 | $188 | 1,100 to 10,000 | $259 |
| 30 to 39 | $246 | 10,000 to 50,000 | $332 |

| 50 to 59 | $212 | 100,000 or more | $510 |
| 60 to 69 | $296 | ||
| 70 to 79 | $411 | ||
| 80 or more | $461 |
Price rises steadily with traffic and unevenly with DR. In the same study, insertions by quality tier averaged $174 for low, $330 for mid (DR 40 to 70 with 10,000 to 49,000 visits), $615 for high and $778 for top tier (DR 81 or more with 100,000 or more visits).
Guest posts cover a wider range.

The gambling average is low because the pool is mostly link farms. The quality figure is the one to budget with. For restricted niches such as casino, CBD, adult and payday loans, commentators report publisher markups from 30% to 50% up to several times general rates. Those claims are low confidence, and we found no clean 2026 dataset for CBD. The iGaming hub has more on that market.
Cost by country and language
ESBO’s September 2026 analysis, as reported by Entrepreneur, gives median sponsored article prices by market.
| Market | Median price |
|---|---|
| Sweden | $1,440 |
| Norway | $1,350 |
| English, Australian audience | $1,330 |
| Germany | $1,230 |
| Finland | $1,230 |
| Central and Eastern Europe | $490 |
| English, global | $380 |
| English, South Asian audience | about $100 |
Adsy’s 2024 data on guest post list prices by country shows Switzerland highest at $1,218, then Ireland $800, Australia $741, the UK $713, Canada $605 and the US $583.
For digital PR, a BuzzStream survey of about 70 respondents, reported by Whito, put the cost per earned link at about £610 in the UK and £260 in the US.
A rule of thumb among practitioners is that price follows the audience’s purchasing power and how few publishers exist in the language, not the value of the link. We found no dataset for Greek, Balkan or other smaller European languages.
Monthly budgets and retainers
- SEOs say competitive niches need $8,406 a month on average, in a range of $4,000 to $150,000 (Editorial.link, 2026).
- Link building takes 32.1% of the SEO budget at agencies and 36% in-house, and 56% of respondents outsource at least part of it (same survey).
- About 60% of digital PR budgets are under $10,000 a month (BuzzStream, 2026).
- UK agency retainers checked by Whito in September 2026 ran from £2,995 to £3,500 for 5 to 10 placements up to £13,995 for 60 or more.
In-house, agency or hybrid
| Model | Monthly cost | Cost per link | Strength | Weakness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| In-house team | $18,500 to $34,620 for about 30 links | $400 to $700 fully loaded | Control, owned relationships | Hiring, tooling, slow start |
| Agency retainer | $3,000 to $10,000 typical | $300 to $600 outreach, $750 to $1,500 digital PR | Speed, existing relationships | Markups, opacity, recycled inventory |
| Vendors and marketplaces | Variable | $100 to $500 list, often $60 to $200 paid | Flexible, fast | The quality pool is a small share of inventory |
| Freelancer or small team | $1,000 to $4,000 | $150 to $400 | Cheap, flexible | Depends on one person |
| Hybrid | Blended | Blended | Control plus capacity | Needs a strong in-house owner |
The in-house figures rest on one 2026 Vazoola analysis cited by BlueTree. The agency, freelancer and marketplace ranges are medium-confidence market ranges, so treat them as guides. In a hybrid model, strategy, vetting and relationships stay in-house and production is bought in.
An agency makes little sense below about $1,500 a month, a practitioner rule of thumb, because at that level you tend to be sold marketplace inventory with a markup. Our desk reviews of the FatJoe service, The HOTH’s link products and Loganix’s published prices show what three vendors charge.
To compare models fairly, use one formula: salaries, tools, content, publisher fees and management overhead, divided by the links that are live and indexed after 90 days.

Common questions
How much does link building cost per link?
It depends on the method. BuzzStream's 2026 data puts a niche edit at $179 on average, a guest post at $295 direct or $461 through a vendor, and digital PR at $1,250 to $1,500 per unique linking domain. SEOs surveyed by Editorial.link in 2026 said about $509 was an acceptable price for one high-quality link.
How much should I budget for link building each month?
SEOs surveyed by Editorial.link in 2026 said competitive niches need $8,406 a month on average, within a range of $4,000 to $150,000. Link building takes about a third of the SEO budget in the same survey.
Why are some backlinks so cheap?
Because most sites that sell links are low quality. BuzzStream found that 96.2% of roughly 257,000 guest post sellers were low quality and 39.6% had no organic traffic. Public network links sell for $1 to $5 each.
Is it cheaper to build links in-house or use an agency?
At about 30 links a month, an in-house team costs $400 to $700 per link fully loaded, according to a 2026 Vazoola analysis. Agency outreach links typically run $300 to $600. An agency is usually cheaper at low volume and in-house at high volume.
Do links cost more in gambling and finance?
Yes on quality sites. BuzzStream's 2026 data shows gambling guest posts at $1,109 on sites with DR 50 or more and 10,000 monthly visits, against $238 across all sellers. UK marketplace data for July 2026 shows gambling about 58% and finance about 38% above the overall average.
