Brand mentions and citations

A brand mention is your name on another site, with or without a link. A citation is a listing of your business details in a directory. Both are off-page signals, and mentions are the factor that tracks AI visibility most closely.

In short

  • A Google patent granted in 2014 defines an "implied link" as a reference to a site that is not a clickable link, but a patent is not proof of use in live ranking.
  • Branded web mentions correlated with visibility in Google's AI Overviews at 0.664 in Ahrefs' 2025 study of 75,000 brands, against 0.218 for backlinks.
  • Those figures are correlations, so they do not show that mentions cause AI visibility, and large brands have more of everything.
  • Local citations list a business name, address and phone number, and they cost between $2.00 and $3.20 each through BrightLocal.
  • Asking for a link on an existing mention costs roughly $20 to $80 in labour per link, by practitioner estimate, which makes it one of the cheapest tactics.

A brand mention is any reference to your brand on a site you do not control: in a news article, a review, a forum thread or a video. It may carry a link or not. A citation, in local SEO, is a listing of your business name, address and phone number. The word has a second meaning now, which is being shown as a source in an AI answer.

Link builders used to treat a mention with no link as a near miss. The evidence from AI search has changed that. This lesson covers what is known about each signal and how firm it is.

Linked and unlinked mentions

A linked mention is a backlink with your name around it. An unlinked mention is your name alone.

The two are closer than they look. A reader sees your brand either way. A journalist who names you has made the same editorial decision whether or not house style allows a link, and many national newsrooms have a policy of not linking out.

The term “implied link” comes from a Google patent, US 8,682,892, titled “Ranking search results”, filed in September 2012 and granted in March 2014. It names Navneet Panda, the engineer behind the Panda update, as an inventor.

The patent defines an express link as a hyperlink a user can follow. It defines an implied link as “a reference to a target resource” that is included in a source page “but is not an express link”. It then describes a calculation that uses a count of independent links together with a count of “reference queries”, which are searches that refer to the site, in effect searches for the brand.

Two points are worth keeping.

  1. The patent treats mentions and brand searches as part of the same picture as links.
  2. A patent shows what Google thought of, not what it runs. Google has not confirmed that unlinked mentions feed live ranking.

For classic search results, the fair summary in 2026 is that unlinked mentions probably have some value and that it is unproven. Practitioners are less cautious: 80.9% of SEOs believe unlinked brand mentions affect rankings, according to a March 2026 survey of 518 SEOs by Editorial.link. That is a belief, not a measurement.

Brand searches and reputation

Mentions also work through people. Coverage makes more people search for you by name and click your result when they see it. Testimony in the US antitrust case confirmed that Google uses click data heavily through a system called Navboost. That off-page work which builds brand demand can lift rankings without any link is a strong inference from that testimony, not a published formula.

Google’s quality rater guidelines also tell raters to research what independent sources say about a site, such as news articles, reviews and forum discussions. We have not re-read the latest revision for this lesson, so take that as a summary and not a quotation. Rater scores do not rank pages directly. They are used to evaluate Google’s ranking systems, so the guidelines show what Google wants those systems to reward.

Why mentions matter for AI assistants

This is where the evidence is strongest. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands and measured what correlated with how often a brand was mentioned in Google’s AI Overviews. The study was published in May 2025.

Factor Correlation with AI Overview mentions
Branded web mentions 0.664
Branded anchors 0.527
Branded search volume 0.392
Domain Rating 0.326
Referring domains 0.295
Backlinks 0.218

An update in December 2025 covered ChatGPT and Google’s AI Mode as well. Branded web mentions scored 0.664 for ChatGPT and 0.709 for AI Mode. Mentions on YouTube were the strongest single factor, at 0.737 for ChatGPT.

Read these numbers with three cautions.

  • They are correlations. Big brands have more mentions, more searches, more links and more AI visibility for the same underlying reason. The study does not show that adding mentions causes visibility.
  • They come from a vendor. Ahrefs sells tools in this field, as do most of the companies publishing this kind of research.
  • Links are still in the picture. Branded anchors, which are links whose text is the brand name, rank second in the table. A linked mention is still a mention.

One more finding supports the same direction, with less certainty. Muck Rack, which sells PR software, reported in May 2026 that earned media made up 84% of the links cited by AI assistants in its sample, and paid or advertorial content 0.3%. Its definition of earned is broad and includes Reddit, Wikipedia and review sites.

The mechanism is simple. An assistant retrieves documents and writes an answer from them. If your brand appears in the documents it trusts, next to the terms that describe your category, it can appear in the answer. A nofollow link or no link at all does not change that.

Local citations

A local citation is a listing of your business name, address and phone number, known as NAP, on a directory, a map service or a data aggregator. Citations help search engines confirm that a business exists and where it is.

The usual order of work is to fix one exact version of your name, address and phone number, then claim Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, then the main directories and data aggregators, then directories for your industry and city.

Costs are low. BrightLocal charges $2.00 to $3.20 per citation, and $30 per aggregator network. Practitioners in our research put the useful total at around 30 to 80 citations per location, which is an estimate and not a tested figure.

Keep expectations modest. Citations are a baseline that every serious local competitor already has. They work mostly as a signal for the map results and for confirming the business as an entity, and less as ranking links. Whitespark’s 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey of 47 experts, published in November 2025, reports review and behavioural signals rising. The common faults are inconsistent details across listings and business names stuffed with keywords. See local citations for the process.

When a site already mentions you, asking for a link is a small request. The writer has made the editorial decision. Practitioner estimates in our research put the labour at roughly $20 to $80 per link gained.

Claimed success rates vary widely, from 5% to 15% in some guides to 30% to 50% in others, and none of them rests on a published dataset. The request works best within days of publication and fails where the publisher has a no-link policy. Unlinked mentions has the workflow.

If the answer is no, the mention keeps its value.

Digital PR is the main way to earn mentions at scale. For the wider argument about links and AI, read do backlinks still matter.

Common questions

What is an unlinked brand mention?

It is a reference to your brand, product or people on another website that does not include a link to you. SEOs also call it an implied link, a term taken from a Google patent.

Do unlinked mentions help Google rankings?

Probably a little, but it is unproven. A Google patent describes counting them, and Google has never confirmed using them in live ranking. The evidence is much stronger for AI assistants than for classic search results.

What is a local citation?

It is a listing of a business's name, address and phone number on a directory, a map service or a data aggregator. Citations matter mainly for local search.

Why do brand mentions matter for AI assistants?

AI assistants build answers from documents they retrieve. A brand that is named often, in sources the assistant trusts, is more likely to appear. Ahrefs' 2025 data shows mentions track AI visibility far more closely than link counts.
